1. Where is the Central Library & Information Center of University of Western Macedonia located? Where are the branch libraries located?

The Central Library and Information of the University of Western Macedonia, in Kozani, is located at the Administrative Building, on the 1st floor.

The Library and Information Center of the School of Agriculture in Florina, is located within the main University building (end of Kontopoulou).

The Library and Information Center of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and School of Fine Arts, is located within the main University building.

The Library and Information Center of the University of Western Macedonia, in Kastoria, is located within the main building in the area of Fourka. You can visit it from the center of Kastoria by using the bus services.

2. How do I arrive at the Library?

You can visit the Central Library and Information Center if you take a bus from the city center of Kozani with University as a destination.

You can visit the Florina Branch Library if you take a bus from the city center of Florina with University as a destination.

You can visit the Kastoria Branch Library if you take a bus with University as a destination.

4. How can I find out if you have the book I need?

You can either search for the book on your own using the Library online catalog or contact the circulation desk and ask the staff to perform the search for you.

Access to the online catalog. Anyone can have access to the online catalogs of the Libraries of the University of Western Macedonia. Via the online catalogs you are able to search for monographs located at the Libraries. For further assistance you can contact the Library staff.

Finally, trace the book on the shelves according to its classification number that corresponds to the book subjects.

5. Can I have access to the online catalog of the Library outside the premises of University campus?

Yes, via Online Library Catalog

Anyone can have access to the online catalogs of the Libraries of the University of Western Macedonia. Via the online catalogs you are able to search for monographs located at the Libraries.

6. Can I borrow a book if I am not a member of the academic community of University?

You cannot borrow books or other types of material, but you can study them at the Library. If you wish so, you may become a Library patron as an external user.

7. I am not a member of the academic community of University. Can I become a Library patron?

Those that are not members of the academic community of University and wish to become Library users should sign a statement in which they accept the Library regulations and which includes all of their personal data as well as the reasons for which they wish to become users. They should also bring a small head photograph.

(Any data you will give to us will be used for your exchanges with the Library only and shall not be disposed to third parties).

In case you lose your Library card or damage it by mistake, you have the right to replace it after two calendar months.

You can borrow material according to Library policy.

8. I have never used the Library till today. How can I get a Library user card so that I can use the services offered?

In order to have access to the services offered by the Central Library of the University of Western Macedonia you should get a Library card. The Library card is necessary for your exchanges with the Library and especially for borrowing material. Its use is strictly personal and is issued after you deposit at the circulation desk a small head photograph. In case you lose your Library card or damage it by mistake, you have the right to replace it after two calendar months. You can borrow material according to Library policy.

9. Can I borrow all sorts of material from the Library?

You cannot borrow reference material, archival value material, journals, dissertations, theses, statistics and CD-ROMs that come with books.

Renewal of loan period for items

All types of users have the right to renew their items on loan twice, as long as the items have not been requested by another user. After the second renewal the same user may not borrow the same item before a 3-day period. In order to renew the loan period the user must bring the item to the Library before or on the day that it should be returned.

Fines – Penalties

We charge a fine for material that is not returned on the day set by the system.

Damage to or loss of material

Users that lose or perform extensive damage to material should replace it within a short period of time.

10 .Are there photocopy machines for use within the Library?

There are two photocopy machines available to users at the Central Library. Each of the branch libraries has a photocopy machine as well. Photocopy machines are card-operated. You can purchase the cards from the circulation desk. Each card costs 3 euros and you can make 50 photocopies with it.

Users are responsible for complying with copyright laws.

11. Are there any restrictions for items I can bring to the Library?

You shouldn’t bring bags, backpacks, etc. to Library premises. You should place them in especially assigned lockers at the Library entrance.

You are neither allowed to bring coffee, refreshments or to smoke and use cellular phones within Library premises.

12. How can I trace a journal in the Library?

You can search and retrieve articles of online or electronic journals only within the premises of the Libraries of University.

13. Can I request an article that I cannot find in the Library?

You can request an article as long as you are a member of the academic community of University and the article is traced in a Greek library or a library abroad that co-operates with the National Network of Scientific and Technological Libraries. The Central Library of the University of Western Macedonia processes article requests by other Greek libraries through the Network and with the support of the National Documentation Center (see Journals Union Catalog). There are 233 libraries – users of the Network, 127 of which (including the Library of University of Western Macedonia) are also libraries – suppliers. The required period for processing a request varies from one working day to four weeks, depending on the means it will be sent (by post or fax) and the institution that the article will be traced.

Requests are made after contacting the InterLibrary Loan Office staff (Ms. Dimitra Dimopoulou tel. +302461068203).

In order to make a request for InterLibrary Loan you must be either teaching staff or a student. Those interested should be aware of the fact that the service is charged depending on the type of material requested and the library that it comes from (Greece or abroad).

14. Are there any computers available for users at the Library?

There are 20 computers available to users at the Central Library, while each of the branch Libraries in Florina and Kastoria has 10 computers available. These computers provide access to the Internet for research purposes and for searching the online catalogs of the libraries and accessing the electronic resources, the bibliographic databases and the electronic journals that the Library and Publishing Service subscribes to.

15. Does the Library offer any kind of training to its readers?

The Central Library organizes special hourly seminars on the use of databases, OPAC search and bibliographic retrieval after contacting the academic staff of each Department. Shortly, the branch Libraries will also be giving such seminars.

16. I am a member of the academic community. Can I order a book?

Members of the academic community can suggest book purchases, etc., after contacting the Library Director.

Purchase suggestions are received by the Acquisitions Office and are processed after decision of the appropriate bodies (University Council, President of the University, Library Committee).

17. Can I have access to the databases and electronic journals provided by the Library?

Members of the academic community have the possibility to access bibliographic databases and the full text of journals within the premises of University.

18. Can I access the Internet within the Library premises?

There are 20 computers available to users at the Central Library, while each of the branch Libraries in Florina and Kastoria has 20 computers available. Those computers provide access to the Internet for research purposes.

19. Can I print or save a file on USB disk?

You can process text and save on USB disk while working at a Library computer and printing is available.

20. Can I check my e-mail from Library computers?

Computers should be used for research purposes. However, you can check your e-mail account, but research comes first. This is why you may be asked to give your seat to someone who would like to use the computer for research purposes.

21. Can I access the Library website from home?

You can access the website, but in order to have full access to the Library’s databases and electronic journals you should use one of the computers located at the Library premises.
